Block Foundation
How a concrete block foundation is built: the trench, delivering and unloading the blocks, laying them, waterproofing, and where it suits.

A foundation on concrete blocks is quite a fast way to lay a foundation. However, the undeniable drawback of this technology is its cost.
Whether a concrete block foundation can be used depends on soil conditions, including the groundwater level and frost heave, and on the calculation of the base. Uneven settlement can lead to cracks in the foundation and in the structures of the house.
How is a block foundation installed?
1. A trench is dug for the concrete blocks
It can be dug by hand, but it is better to use special machinery. That will be much faster.
2. Delivering the concrete blocks to the site and unloading them
You need to find a truck that will bring the concrete blocks to your site, and a crane to set them in place as well. Take care that the blocks are not damaged in transit, because damaged blocks will be unusable.

3. Laying the blocks
It is very important to fit them together as closely as possible without damaging them. If there are gaps between the blocks, water can get into them and eventually destroy the whole foundation.
4. Waterproofing the foundation
Protection of the foundation and of the block joints from water must be provided for in the design. The condition of the joints depends on the design of the connections, the quality of workmanship and operating conditions; the joints may be damaged and water may penetrate.
That is how a foundation of concrete blocks is built. It is fast, but quite expensive. However, if price is not a decisive factor for you and you are sure of the builders who will construct it, a block foundation is a perfectly good option for your house.
